The Alaskan Malamute: A truly beautiful breed – But is it the dog for you?

For the right family the Malamute can be the ideal pet, but they certainly do not suit every household.  We would ask you to consider the following before making the decision to own an Alaskan Malamute.  Unfortunately, many of these beautiful canines get abandoned at shelters or rescued by purebred rescue organizations every year.  This then entails neutering, spaying, inoculations and care with future homing.

  1. The Alaskan Malamute is a large breed with a male weighing between 45 and 50 kilograms and are also immensely powerful animals.

  2. The Malamute is a heavily coated dog, which does a certain amount of shedding and as a result needs regular grooming to maintain optimum condition..

  3. Malamutes are keen ‘gardeners’ but unfortunately their idea of landscaping might not conform to yours.

  4. Mals are intrepid hunters and cannot live on the same property with duck, chickens, rabbits, other smaller livestock, etc. – they will kill them.

  5. Although generally gentle and loving with people, Malamutes are generally not sociable with other dogs.

  6. Malamutes tend to be very pack oriented and unlike most other breeds, pushy and dominant at the Alaskan Malamute are difficult for some people to live with or understand how to handle. They will live happily with a dog of the opposite sex but seldom will tolerate another dog of the same sex.  An un-socialised and untrained Malamute can be difficult to handle.

  7. Malamutes have little or no guarding instinct, so are not good watchdogs.

  8. Malamutes are born travellers and generally can't be trusted off leash and are intrepid escape artists and won't stay on an unfenced property.

  9. They are high maintenance, time consuming and expensive to keep safe and healthy.

  10. Malamutes can be noisy, inherently stubborn, always a challenge and must be approached with a strong sense of the ridiculous.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE:

  1. Malamutes do not often bark

  2. Malamutes have a calm disposition and are easy to live with around the house.

  3. Malamutes are a Spitz breed – they give off no ‘doggy’ odour and keep themselves very clean.

  4. Many people who suffer from animal allergies can live quite happily with Malamutes with no allergic reaction.

  5. Malamutes have a loving nature; they are not one man dogs and will relate to all members of the family.

  6. Because of their size and facial masks, they are a deterrent to anyone thinking of entering your property.

We would recommend that you contact THE ALASKAN MALAMUTE CLUB OF GAUTENG for more information on this beautiful breed before making the decision to own one.
